What You Need to Know
A new federal requirement takes effect January 1, 2027. Practitioners who are eligible to enroll in Medi-Cal Fee-for-Service (FFS) are required to do so. This applies based on whether a practitioner has an available enrollment pathway, not based on the specific services they provide. If your practitioners are not yet enrolled, the steps below will walk them through the process.
How to Enroll: Step by Step
1. Get a Type 1 (Individual) NPI at the NPPES website if you do not already have one.
2. Go to pave.dhcs.ca.gov and create your PAVE account using a personal email address.
3. Log in, enter your NPI, and complete your profile using your full legal name.
4. Start a new application: select new to Medi-Cal, individual provider, and Ordering/Referring/Prescribing (ORP) provider.
5. Complete all application sections including personal information, license, education, practice location, and disclosures.
6. Upload required documents: a valid state ID, current professional license, and NPI verification.
7. Submit your application. You will receive a confirmation and tracking number.
8. DHCS will review your application. Initial review typically takes 90 to 180 days. Monitor your PAVE portal for any requests.
9. Once approved, you will receive your Medi-Cal provider number.
